The Softball Academy

From Greg Rogers

I designed The Softball Academy to be more than just a skill development program. The Softball Academy places an emphasis on the importance of training the “mental game” and character development through physical skills training. As players advance, the separation of skill ability between players narrows. At higher levels, what often separates good players from great players is generally referred to as “mental toughness”. We implement mental game training in every session by recognizing moments that create frustration, anxiety or even outright fear. We treat these moments as opportunities to learn, not avoid.

I believe that courageous players do not avoid failure, anxiety or fear. Courageous players move forward in the face of failure, anxiety and fear. We use real-world game situations to openly discuss the feelings and emotions associated with these moments. By addressing these challenges openly and head-on, our players normalize and identify with them. Once they realize they’re not alone they are empowered to learn the skills to overcome adversity.

Completing the triad is character building. The skills learned in The Softball Academy are designed to benefit our athletes for life. They learn how to do their own individual best while working within a team. They learn communication and leadership skills so they can be better equipped to face careers and relationships. They learn that adversity is something to learn from, not be an excuse for failure. In the end, we are creating productive, confident young women that will be our next leaders.
